What Are Rye Berries?

Rye berries are the whole grain that comes from Rye. Rye is a cereal grain and is very different from rye grass. The berries are very high in fiber, minerals, protein, and vitamins. All of which are very beneficial when it comes to cultivating gourmet mushrooms. In fact, they’re preferred over other grain spawns like corn kernels, brown rice, and bird seed because the nutritional content is much higher in the rye berries. 

However, it’s their ability to absorb large amounts of water relative to their size that makes them so delicious to mushrooms. A single rye berry can triple in size once it’s fully hydrated. Having well hydrated spawn is absolutely essential to healthy mycelial and mushroom growth.
