When you buy the Albino Choose Your Own 3 Swab Bundle, spore visibility is dependent on the characteristics of the spores themselves. As a result, not all spore swabs will look the same visibly. Despite any visible differences, they’re still viable for microscopy research.

What Is Albinism?

Over the last few years, albino mushrooms and their spores have become exceedingly popular in both the microscopy and mycology communities. Albino Penis Envy and Avery’s Albino were once some of the most sought after Cubensis genetics- everyone needed to have them a part of the spore library. While they’re still very popular varieties, the True Albino Teacher (T.A.T.) genetics have taken the community by storm and are now the “must have” Cubensis genetics.

But what is Albinism? Albinism is a genetic mutation that can specifically affect the genes responsible for producing pigments. This means that affected individuals, known as Albinos, lack all color pigmentation. Most animal species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, etc), as well as mushrooms can be affected by it. In most albino animals, the pigment that’s lacking is melanin. While mushrooms do contain melanin, they also contain a multitude of other pigments (many of which are used to make medicines) that are also affected by the Albino mutation.

This differs from some of the Leucistic varieties that we have like Rusty Whyte. While the Leucistic varieties appear white or cream color, they do not lack all of their pigments because their spores remain pigmented and a dark purple, brown, or black. Albino varieties on the other hand have clear spores because they do lack all of their pigments.

Albinism is an unpredictable mutation which makes it difficult, yet very rewarding to study in nature. What we do know is that the most common way it manifests is from being passed down from generation to generation. Think back to high school biology and Punnett squares. Albinism is a recessive mutation, so both of the parents must be carriers for the offspring to be Albino. This is one explanation as to why Albinism is relatively rare in the natural world.
