Gandalf Mushroom Information

True Albino Teachers (TAT) have become extremely popular within the microscopy community in the last year or so. It’s an entirely new genetic line that was first started by Jik Fibs. OG TAT is what started it all. It was an albino mutation observed in 5 specimens in a tub of Golden Teachers. Jik Fibs then took samples from those albinos and began to isolate the genetics. Soon, it was completely isolated and produced albino mushrooms every time. Following this was the creation of the Facebook group called the “TAT syndicate.” From there, the TAT syndicate continue to produce new and interesting genetics.

Here we have another set of great genetics that have been introduced by the TAT Syndicate. This variety is also part of the TAM family which is TAT genetics crossed with Melmac making for especially interesting genetics to study. The fruits are a pasty white, bruising a deep dark blue with even the slightest of contact. They are not afraid to grow to rather large in size as both their cap and stem can be quite meaty and tall. Its cap is also fairly white but retains a slight yellow hue throughout the center.

Much like Melmac, and the other mushrooms in the TAT syndicate, Gandalf is not the best spore provider. Even as the mushroom matures, the caps do not open very much. This makes achieving the spores especially difficult as swabbing is really the best method of recovering them. Making the genetics to this strain quite rare. Its spores will be transparent or a bruised blue which is totally normal. This just means that the strain is in fact a true albino! Add these rare genetics to your library and you will not be disappointed!

Gandalf Spore Swab Microscopic Features

When you buy cubensis “Gandalf” Swabs its important to note that because they are an albino variety, they will have transparent spores. When spores are clear they can bruise blue leading the swab to appear blue rather than clear. Once you put them under the microscope, they will be clear. The spores are subellipsoid (ellipse) shaped and they are present on a 4-spored basidia. They are approximately 13×8 micrometers in size. The caps are 30-60mm in diameter with a convex to flat shape. The edges tend to be wavy and commonly flip upwards.
