Psilocybe Hoogshagenii Origin Information

Psilocybe Hoogshagenii (also classified as Semperviva) is an interesting mushroom species to add to any spore library. We are excited to offer it to the community! Found all throughout Southern America, but they are in predominately in Mexico. They prefer the subtropical coffee plantations that have clay soil rich in nutrients. Natives of the San Agustin Loxicha region in Mexico describe the mushrooms to grow simultaneously and in large flushes

Like ATL #7, there was some mystery surrounding this mushrooms classification. This makes it fun for all levels of microscopist to try and study. You can try to classify the mushroom spores and see what success/difficulties other researches had! It was first described as “Psilocybe Subtropicalis.” It later changed to “Psilocybe Hoogshagenii var. Semperviva”.

Semperviva  means “ever living” which describes this mushrooms hardy and contamination resistant nature. Hence making Hoogshagenii swabs great for novices getting into the hobby. This is because it will be forgiving against contaminations. Soon later it was thought to be “Psilocybe Hoogshagenii var. Convexa.”  Until finally, Alan Rockefeller genetically sequenced the mushroom and gave it its true classification of “Psilocybe Hoogshagenii.”

Hoogshagenii mushrooms are a red/brown color all throughout and have flecks of white spots. The stems are skinny to medium in density and lead to a bell shaped cap. These caps can be conical or convex until maturing and opening up more. Overall these Hoogshagenii prints are a fun and exciting purchase for first time hobbyist, to veteran microscopist!
