Turkey Tails Information
Turkey Tails are a medicinal mushroom that is common in many parts of the world including the US, Canada, Japan, Europe, and China. It’s one of the most commonly found mushrooms in North America- if you take a stroll through the woods, it’s very likely you’ll stumble across some. They have been used as traditional medicine in these areas for many centuries. Even today, they are commonly used by cancer patients in conjunction with other treatments.
The scientific name of this species is Trametes versicolor- versicolor meaning “of several colors”. The mushroom fruit itself grows in layers of browns, whites, blacks, and creams. It gets its common name because the shape and color of the mushroom is reminiscent of the tail feathers of a wild turkey. Turkey Tails are typically small in size, however what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers. They commonly fruit out many mushrooms in one area.
In nature, you’ll find these mushrooms growing on dead, decomposing trees. While they prefer hardwood trees, they are also found growing on conifers from time to time. The great thing about this species is that it can be foraged all year round! The mycelium of this species is incredibly thick and resilient. Because of this, it’s a common material in producing eco-friendly products like packaging, insulation and textiles.
