Syzygy LC Information

The word “syzygy” is one with many meanings, but some of the most known are relating to astrology and Jungian psychology. In terms of astrology, a syzygy is a linear configuration of three celestial bodies. The Sun, Earth, and Moon during eclipses, for example. In regards to Jungian psychology, syzygy is Carl Jung’s term for the union of opposites. More specifically, the union of masculine and feminine principles in the human psyche to form a more complete whole. Both of these subjects may be ones that you find yourself contemplating while studying Syzygy genetics. 

Syzygy as a mushroom and spores are intrinsically tied to psychonaut culture and Western mycology history. After publishing their book Psilocybin: Magic Mushrooms Grower’s Guide, Terance and Dennis McKenna founded a company called Syzygy. This company sold mushroom grow kits for amateur mycologists to apply the information found in their book. The spores sold in those kits are now known as “Syzygy”.

Syzygy may look like a normal Cubensis mushroom- complete white stem with a nice golden brown cap, but you have to remember that these spores were meant for people who were just learning about mushrooms and mycology. All of this was happening in the early 80s so there was no access to Reddit forums or Shroomery or YouTube to get information. Through the distribution of these grow kits and Syzygy spores, Terence and Denis completely revolutionized the propagation of not only mushrooms, but also knowledge about magic mushrooms and psychedelics.

Microscopic Features

Liquid culture syringes (also sometimes called ISO’s) contain mushroom genetics that are more stabilized than normal multispore syringes (MSS). Great care has been taken to isolate the strongest, fastest, and most hardy genetics that will provide vigorous and more consistent research under the microscope. Multispore syringes contain a great deal of genetic diversity, and therefore can present a multitude of different phenotypes. On the other hand, liquid culture syringes have been stabilized in order to present a more uniform phenotype which will provide the most optimized and consistent research.

Syzygy spores can vary in color from dark purple to black. They’re subellipsoid (ellipse) shaped and they are present on a 4-spored basidia. The caps range from 40-60mm in diameter with a convex to conic shape. They are generally dark spore printers.
