When buying Red Boy spores, be aware that they’re considered “active spores” which are for microscopy purposes only. DO NOT CONTACT US ABOUT ANYTHING REGARDING CULTIVATING OR GERMINATING ACTIVE SPORES.

Shipping is unavailable to California, Idaho, & Georgia. These 3 states strictly prohibit the possession of spores from psilocybin and psilocin producing mushroom species. Orders to these states will be refused and voided. Any payments made for orders to CA, ID, or GA will incur a $5 cancellation fee.

The provided images are for informational and educational purposes only and should only be used as a reference point. Images and spores are acquired from outside, trusted sources in a legal manner. We do not condone or participate in the cultivation of psilocybin or psilocin producing mushroom species.

When you buy Red Boy spore syringe, visibility is dependent on the characteristics of the spores themselves. As a result, not all spore syringes will look the same visibly. Despite any visible differences, they are still viable for microscopy research. More information on how we make our spore syringes and possible visible differences, check out our FAQ or blog post How To Make Spore Syringes.

Red Boy Spore Information

Red Boys are a must have for any mycologist as they have a mutation that causes them to uniquely drop red or rust colored spores. It was a very popular variety in the 90s but disappeared for some time. It was brought back into the mainstream from a spore print that was over 20 years old. Proving the hardiness of these spores can be truly unremarkable!

Red Boys are another mushroom strain with a unique characteristic that makes them desirable amongst many researchers. As implied by their name, these mushrooms do have red throughout their fruit. They have unusually large caps with a medium dense stem. Their slight red/cinnamon color is especially prevalent throughout the cap and gills.

But the real interesting aspect is their spores. Unlike regular dark colored spores or many albino’s mushrooms that have transparent spores, these spores are red. And this may not be unique to only this mushroom, it does make this mushroom a great introduction into pigmented spores for amateurs. Advanced microscopist can also enjoy the beautiful color this brings to their spore libraries!

Microscopic Features

Red boys swabs will have reddish orange to brown like spores, often giving off a rust-like color. This is a genetic mutation in the mushroom world referred to as “rust spores” and makes them very unique. They are subellipsoid (ellipse) shaped and present on 4-spored basidia. Further they have average to larger size caps generally ranging from 25mm-75mm and are dense spore depositors.
