Thai Pink Buffalo Spore Information

Thai Pink Buffalo is another Cubensis strain that hails from Thailand. In fact, it was first discovered in Koh Samui, which is the same city that the Koh Samui Strain was also found in! In 1990, John W Allen, or “Mushroom John” found a Thai Pink Buffalo specimen growing in the jungles of Thailand. Mushroom John is a very accomplished and famous ethnomycologist (one who studies the historical uses and sociological impact of mushrooms) and writer. He has discovered many mushroom species, like Psilocybe allenii, for example. He’s also the author of a multitude of books and scientific papers. Many of his works are still cited by other scientists and researchers today. 

While in Thailand during one of his many mushroom forays, he states that he noticed a mushroom growing in a rice paddy where a pink buffalo was also seen, hence how this variety got its name. And yes, pink buffalos are a real thing! They are actually albino water buffaloes. Their pink skin can is seen through their white hair making them look like a light pink, mystical creature. In some areas of Thailand, it is considered good luck to see a pink buffalo. 

The mushroom itself is a prized specimen for research for a few different reasons. Firstly, in nature they tend to produce large caps that drop heavy spore deposits. This provides researchers with a lot of material to study! Further, it is common for this variety’s veil to remain attached to the cap, even when matured, which helps keep the spores contained for collection. Finally, Thai Pink Buffalo mushrooms tend to produce large specimens when found in nature. All of these characteristics, plus it’s unique back story make this variety a favorite among microscopists.

Microscopic Features

Thai Pink Buffalo have spores that are dark purple to black in color and are approximately 13×8 micrometers in size. The spores are present on a 4-spored basidia, are subellipsoid (ellipse) shaped, and are just beautiful to look at underneath the microscope. 

The caps of this variety can vary from 25-75mm in diameter and they can have massive stems that can measure from 125-200mm in length. The caps commonly have a pronounced nipple on the top.
