When you buy Melmac swabs, spore visibility is dependent on the characteristics of the spores themselves. As a result, not all spore swabs will look the same visibly. Despite any visible differences, they’re still viable for microscopy research.
Melmac Mushroom Strain Information
Melmac has a very interesting history that is intimately entwined with the history of at-home mycology and psychedelics. Homestead Penis Envy, aka Melmac, is the original Penis Envy genetics that were sold in mushroom grow kits from a store located in the Pacific Northwest in the 80’s and 90’s. The store went by the name “Homestead” and it was the Hot Topic of its time. These kits became so popular that they were even sold through The High Times magazine.
Many people believe that Terrance McKenna was the creator of Penis Envy, however that is only partially true. What is true is that McKenna brought back spores from Cubensis specimens he found while exploring in the Amazonian Rainforest. These spores were later distributed to other researchers and mycologists for study.
Rich Gee is the mycologist that is credited with actually creating the ‘modern Penis Envy’. He claims to have isolated the variety from an aborted pin originally from the spores that came from McKenna in the Rainforest. Since its creation in the 80’s it has been extremely popular, as you probably know.
Melmac vs Penis Envy
Gee’s creation was then sold in Homestead’s grow kit. Homestead coined the genetics as “Melmac” which is the home planet of the fictional character Alf (a very popular sitcom from the 80s). The genetic mutation associated with Melmac and Penis Envy doesn’t allow the caps to fully open and many times, not drop spores. Consequently, the unopened caps atop of very thick stems cause the mushrooms to look like a penis.
Over time, with more mycologists working with Melmac, more and more isolations were created. Eventually, from Melmac came Penis Envy. In other words, Penis Envy is just an even further isolation of Melmac. However, there are still some notable differences between the original Melmac and the more current Penis Envy. The most noticeable difference is the stems. Melmac tends to have very bulbous, uneven, almost alien-like, stems. Their caps also tend to be very wavy along the edges. All in all, Melmac specimens tend to look more mutated than their newer Penis Envy counterparts.

Microscopic Features
When you buy clean Melmac spore swabs you will see the spores as dark purple to brownish. The spores are subellipsoid (ellipse) shaped and they are present on a 4-spored basidia. The caps can be a diameter of 50+ mm but will rarely open fully up. These have diminished spore production from their mutation and only 25 percent will produce spores. So that makes these spores very difficult to acquire, just like the other Penis Envy’s.
