When you buy Melmac TP swabs, spore visibility is dependent on the characteristics of the spores themselves. As a result, not all spore swabs will look the same visibly. Despite any visible differences, they’re still viable for microscopy research.

Origin Information

This variety is an extra robust isolate of Melmac (Homestead Penis Envy/Penis Envy). TP = Thick Penis. Melmac itself is the original Penis Envy genetics that were sold in mushroom grow kits from a store in the 80’s and 90’s. The store was called “Melmac Homestead” and was the Hot Topic of its time. The genetics themselves have deformity that cause the caps to not fully open. This gives them their name “Penis Envy” as the deformity causes the specimen to resemble a penis. They usually grow very large hence the envy part or the name. They have trouble producing and dropping spores, which is why they are exotics and sold in swabs only, luckily for you we have this swab ready for purchase!
 
Melmac TP is well known for being a rare yet unique looking mushroom. Moreover this strain has a cap that looks similar to the Penis envy strain; but the difference lies in the stem, because Melmac TP stems are much larger. The color on this mushroom is also captivating, as it goes from this warm yellow center and fades into an off-white around the edges. The bright white stem on this stain bruises a deep blue on contact. Melmac TP is great for people looking to add some variety to their spore library, but also great for beginner microscopist looking to venture into the Penis Envy family.

Microscopic Features

Melmac TP have dark purple to brownish spores. Moreover they are subellipsoid (ellipse) in shape and have 4-spored basidia. Caps can be diameter of 50+ mm but will rarely open fully up, with many not even opening at all. Also these have diminished spore production from the mutation and only 25 percent will produce spores. So this makes these spores very difficult to acquire, just like the other Penis Envy isolates.

Subtropical. These mushrooms are known to thrive in subtropical climates places where summers get hot and humid, and the winters are mild. Usually these climates are found between the latitudes of 25 degrees and 35 degrees and the southeast side of all continents.
Sporulation

Extremely Light Depositor Mushrooms that typically have problems with producing spores, either because of genetic lineage or species variability. Typically these mushrooms produces spores on 50 percent or less of fully mature fruits and rarely drop them from the gills.
