Pearl Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus) is a very common mushroom that grows throughout North America and Europe. In North America, you can find this mushroom fruiting wildly almost all year round. It’s a shelf-shaped mushroom that typically grows in clusters. You can find them colonizing hardwood trees, however they do also fruit off of conifers. Beech trees are one of their favorite food sources. 

Something interesting about Pearl Oysters is that they are one of the very few carnivorous mushrooms that we know about! They have been known to kill and digest nematodes. This is also one of the main species that are used for mycoremediation projects such as removing oil from soil. 

Pearl Oysters are very easy to cultivate at home making them great for beginners. They aren’t pick about substrate; they do well with all-in-one bags, on logs, with sawdust, and even with pasteurized straw! While Pearl Oysters have an ideal temperature and humidity range, they’re very adaptable and can still fruit in a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels.
