Spore Syringes: Storage & Use
Storage:
- Spore syringes can be kept at room temperature and remain viable for approximately 1 year. However, there have been reports of them staying good for 2-3 years at room temp
- Although they will remain viable at room temperature, keeping them in the refrigerator can drastically increase shelf life
- DO NOT FREEZE
- Keep spore syringes out of direct sunlight. The spores are so small that they can be damaged by UV rays present in sunlight
How To Use:
- For best viewing results, use in a sterile environment! In front of laminar flow and/or a HEPA filter is ideal, but still air boxes (SAB) or in a small, freshly sterilized room with no air flow can work. Note that there is an increased risk of contamination if not used in a completely sterile environment
- We make all of our spore syringes in front of laminar flow hoods with HEPA filter to ensure the cleanest possible products for viewing
- Be sure to wear a mask and gloves when handling spore syringes.
- Sterilize the entire syringe with 70-85% isopropyl alcohol before using
- Shake the syringe vigorously to break up any clumped spores
- Open needle’s sterile packaging
- Remove black cap from syringe and then quickly attach needle to the syringe
- The needle should always be flame sterilized before every use. Let needle cool and then dispense spore solution for research
***ACTIVE SPORE SYRINGES ARE FOR MICROSCOPY USE AND RESEARCH ONLY
How much of the spore syringe should be dispensed into a 1.5lb bag?
Hi! Spore syringes of active species should only be used for microscopy purposes. However for syringes of gourmet species, we recommend using approx. 1cc for every pound in the bag. So for a 1.5lb about 1-2cc
