When you buy Black Cap spores, visibility is dependent on the characteristics of the spores themselves. As a result, not all spore swabs will look the same visibly. Despite any visible differences, they are still viable for microscopy research.

A New Discovery

Psilocybe Ochraceocentrata is a very newly described species, however the genetics aren’t new. After DNA sequencing by Alexander Bradshaw & team in 2024, it’s been discovered that the genetics that have been known as Psilocybe Natalensis in the mycology community are actually in fact Ochraceocentrata. They also go by the names “Ochras” and “Black Caps” which are understandably much easier to say.

Similarly to Natalensis, Ochra’s also grow in Africa. The 2 specific specimens that led to the new genetic discovery came from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Nats and Ochras are two separate species, however the genetics in the mycology community that have been labeled as Natalensis are actually Ochraceocentrata. If you’ve purchased Natalensis from us in the past it’s actually Ochraceocentrata. 

According to Bradshaw, there are only approximately 160 described species of mushrooms that contain psilocybin and/or psilocin and only 8 are found in Africa (now including the new identified Ochras). However, he also makes note that it’s entirely possible that there’s more but lack of research across the continent means they may not be scientifically described anytime soon. But just because it’s not recognized scientifically doesn’t mean there’s not local knowledge. If you ask the locals in the area, you’d learn that they already knew that Cubensis, Natalensis, and Ochraceocentrata were all different species. 

Psilocybe Ochraceocentrata “Black Caps” Information

We also learned from the DNA sequencing that Ochraceocentrata is the closest living relative to P. Cubensis we’ve discovered so far. It looks very similar and has practically the same growing parameters as Cubensis. The latin name “Ochraceocentrata” refers to the round, bulbous circle that commonly grows in the center of the cap. 

In nature, Ochra mushroom mycelium is exceptionally thick with rope-like strands that extend out in search of nutrients. While they can get as large as Cubensis, this species generally grows smaller stems and caps. However, Ochras fruit in very large quantities which makes up for their sometimes small size. 

This fungus has become a favorite in the mushroom community for many reasons. For one, it’s just as easy to research as the more common Cubensis– some say they’re actually even easier.

This species is extremely contam resistant and is known to take over contaminations that try to get in their way.
