When you buy Malabar Coast syringes, visibility is dependent on the characteristics of the spores themselves. As a result, not all spore syringes will look the same visibly. Despite any visible differences, they are still viable for microscopy research. More information on how we make our spore syringes and possible visible differences, check out our FAQ or blog post How To Make Spore Syringes.

Malabar Coast Spore Strain Origin information

The Malabar Coast mushroom strain is one that anyone would be luck to add to their spore collectors library. As expected these mushrooms originate from the “Malabar Coast” which is located on the south west side of India. This location is prime for mushroom growth as it as on the edge of the ocean near dense jungles. There they get lots of moisture and, like many mushrooms in this region, it’s commonly found on elephant dung

In an ancient Indian text known as the “Verda” there is reference to a drink known as the “Soma” dating back as far as the 1500 B.C. In the text they call the drink the “fruit of the gods,” and look upon it highly. And though it is not proven, many historians believe that this reference is to a tea made using a Cubensis mushroom! With lots of possible strains, one can only imagine if Malabar Coast was one of these mushrooms. So when you put these mushrooms under neath the microscope there is a lot of history and culture behind them!

Malabar Coast is known for its uniform genets that produce large thick stems, but smaller caps. These caps also have a veil that sometimes never fully tears away from the cap, even with maturity. Another characteristic of Malabar Coast is the blue bruising that occurs when any physical altercation touches the mushroom. The Malabar Coast Strain has spores that are sure to add some individuality to your library!

Microscopic Features

Malabar Coast spores are subellipsoid (ellipse) in shape and present on 4-spored basidia. The spore color is dark purple to brownish. It also has caps that are generally smaller. They also don’t tear away from the partial veil until reaches full maturity. Even then the membranous annulus (ring) on the partial veil will remain attached even after full maturity. This causes spore deposits to be lighter than other varieties.
